Home Care Services - Frequently Asked Questions

Are there eligibility requirements for Home Care Services?
Home Care Services are available to any older adult living in Dane County.  A nurse supervisor will assess the needs and outline a plan noting the type, frequency, and fees for recommended services.

Can the in-home staff transport my family member to and from the grocery store, medical appointments, etc.?
In-home staff cannot transport your family member in their vehicles.  However, an in-home staff member can go to the grocery store, run errands, etc. for the older adult.  Also, your family member can take a taxi or otherwise go to an appointment or store, and the in-home staff can meet there to help as needed.

Can a nurse come to the home to take blood samples, provide care for wounds, or perform other nursing/medical services and monitoring?
Our Home Care staff members are not registered nurses - they are either certified nursing assistants (CNAs) or personal care workers (PCWs).  Our CNAs can provide basic wound care, remind the older adult about medications, give pre-drawn insulin, and monitor vital signs such as blood pressure and glucose levels.  The CNA cannot perform nursing assessments or education.

How does billing work? Does the client pay the in-home staff person directly?
The individual purchasing the services - whether the older adult or the family member - will receive a monthly statement directly from Care Wisconsin.  Our in-home staff members do not receive payments during a home visit or get involved in the billing process.  The older adult, if capable, or the family member, if available, will be asked to sign a timesheet at each visit to verify services.

What are the fees for Home Care Services?
There is a one-time fee of $32 to assess the services the older adult client needs, to establish a schedule, and to orient the CNA or PCW to the specific needs of the client.  Thereafter, the hourly rate ranges from $26 - $32 per hour with a half-hour minimum.  Travel time and mileage expenses are not charged extra.

How soon can Home Care Services begin?
Typically, it will take 7 to 14 days to arrange for a staff member to start the schedule of services.  If you have an emergency need, we can assist you in reviewing your options, but generally we advise families to plan in advance as much as possible.
