Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure gets Care Wisconsin moving

For the ninth year, Care Wisconsin’s Physical Therapy Assistant Angie McConkey and Recreation Specialist for Adult Day Centers Terri Ohmen led a fearless team of Care Wisconsin Partnership members, employees, family and friends in the 12th Annual Susan G. Komen Madison Race for the Cure on Saturday, May 30.

Held at Willow Island at the Alliant Energy Center, the annual race raises money for breast cancer education and research, one of five areas of focus for the organization’s Volunteerism Committee in 2009. Among this year’s team of 32 runners and walkers were seven Dane County Partnership members ranging in age from 63 to 86, and 16 Care Wisconsin employees who walked either the one-mile or 5K walk, or ran the 5K race along with their family or friends.

Partnership members who do the Komen Madison Race each year deal with physical challenges such as diabetes, arthritis, post-stroke effects and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease—and two are themselves breast cancer survivors. Some of them use walkers so that they can rest during the one-mile course. Interesting adventures with the group, a love of keeping frail seniors active and a family history of breast cancer keep the team’s coaches personally motivated each year.

Care Wisconsin employees who did the 2009 race were supported by tremendous employee participation in pre-event activities. The organization held a pink day and a signing by the artist of the race T-shirt. Penny Wars between offices throughout the region raised $2,330.03 alone! The Madison office Medication Room won the contest with a total of $310.19, beating out fierce rival Transportation (Madison), who collected $167.59. The Washington County Family Care team was third, followed by Dane County Partnership Teams #14, 15, and 16 combined.

The 16 employees who registered for this year’s Komen Madison Race for the Cure are: Elizabeth Appleby, Molly Beinborn, Marsha Cohen, Kathy Condit, Karen Erickson, Judy Hefner, Kristin Jeffries, Jackie Krohn, Mark Lamkins, Beth Lee, Angie McConkey, Terri Ohmen, Deb Roever, Julie Sholts, Linda Wells and Mindy Wiseman.
