Service with a Smile: Nate Lands Dream Job in the Dells
Nate | February 23, 2018 | Family Care Client
Nate has been with Care Wisconsin for 3 years. In these years, he has made HUGE employment gains. Nate was among the 7 other interns who participated in the initial Project SEARCH program at the Kalahari Resort-WI Dells.
Project SEARCH is a unique, business-led, one year school-to-work program that takes place entirely at the workplace. Total workplace immersion facilitates a seamless combination of classroom instruction, career exploration, and hands-on training through worksite rotations. (To learn more about the Project SEARCH model program, please check out their website http://www.projectsearch.us/).
Nate completed his rotations with great success and after every rotation, the manager of that department wanted to keep Nate because he was an excellent worker.
Nate was mostly interested in working with the Kalahari visitors so he was given training at the front desk to become a front desk clerk. This position gave Nate the opportunity to welcome guests, check the guests in & out of their rooms, process credit card payments for the rooms and amusement/water parks, direct visitors to their room locations, and more. According to Nate, this was his “dream job.” He had the best of both worlds-he was working with people and he got to work with computers.
After Project SEARCH, Nate was offered a full time position at the Kalahari Resort doing his dream job. Nate was so impressive to the Kalahari staff that he received the “Kalahari Resort Employee of the Year” award, an honor which totally surprised him. This award recognizes how valuable Nate was to the Kalahari Resorts and how impressed the management was with his performance. At this time, he also serves as a mentor to new Project SEARCH interns.
In 2016, Nate was one of the speakers at Care Wisconsin’s all-staff conference. He described his journey through good and challenging times, culminating his story with his successful employment at the Kalahari Resorts.
In June 2017 following Project SEARCH graduation ceremony, Nate had the opportunity to meet with Governor Walker to describe his road to employment success. He was able to explain to Walker how happy he is that he had a chance to experience his dream job. This story was captured and published in the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.
